Unlike brick and mortar school, our homeschool days can look a little bit different depending on the season. We have a different rhythm in Winter than we do in Spring or Fall.

We hunker down and hibernate a bit in the Winter. We do fewer field trips, fewer visits. This is the time of year that we push the hardest on the more academic side of school work. It’s tempting to want to just stay on track (finish the second third of the math book for example), but this is the time of year to be doing favors for Future You.
Future Kathryn is going to get hit with beautiful Spring weather. The kind that calls you irresistibly outside in the middle of a Wednesday, when you should be doing school. Then the field trips will ramp up again. The garden will start calling.
All of those are wonderful things, but if we haven’t stacked a few extra school days into our winter term, we end up with a never ending school year.
It’s also a season of rest, at least physically. We have more movie nights. Curl up on the couch together with a book to read aloud. The kids are more likely to bake, or ask to learn a new craft or skill.
We putter around with house projects that we don’t have time for in the busier months. (Mom’s more likely to have time to check if there’s a mess under your bed, but she might also have time to make you a new hammock for your toys. Balance in the universe.)
We write more letters, read more books, and finish more craft projects.
Or we get sick from January to March and don’t accomplish anything noteworthy until Spring. Depends on the year.
