A plaid skirt with pockets… or walking around in the softest, coziest blanket disguised as clothes?

In which the author shoves aside moving boxes to have a wall to pose in front of.

This isn’t actually a recent make, but I realized it was one that you wouldn’t have seen here. This is the flannel skirt that started my obsession. As far as I’m concerned it is basically the perfect skirt.

It started life as a thrifted bedsheet (to the surprise of no one). It had enough fabric to make a nice long skirt. This really helps to keep me warm. I opted for tea length to keep it up out of the snow and slush though. I wouldn’t recommend longer, despite the temptation.

I went for a flat front waistband and big patch pockets. I think they add a bit of interest to the front of the skirt, and since the material itself is a bit heavier, they are sturdy and can hold a fair bit if needed.

I gathered the back waistband with elastic. This is how I used to prefer all of my skirts, until I started to make them adjustable. It’s the only thing I would tweak about this. In fact, when the elastic starts to wear out a bit I will probably do a small modification to use buttonhole elastic instead.

I can’t honestly say that I have had a problem with the elastic not fitting me correctly yet, but cell phones are heavy and tend to drag my waistbands down if I put it in my pocket… (#firstworldproblems?)

This skirt is soft, warm, and still breathable. It’s really a staple for me in winter and I will get years of wear out of it. If you are looking for a winter sewing project, I can’t recommend making one yourself enough!
