Almost a year ago I posted about my little indoor greenhouse. (You can find that here if you don’t remember: https://www.hodgepodgehomesteading.com/2024/01/19/growing-vegetables-indoors-in-winter/

As much as I loved that little cabinet, there was absolutely no way that it was going to survive moving out East. It was almost entirely glass, including the shelves. What made it a great choice for a greenhouse also made it a terrible candidate for a moving truck.

In which the author reminisces about seedlings past.

I found a fellow plant enthusiast and sold it, along with most of our other furniture, before we moved. When I went to set up my new “greenhouse”, I decided that I didn’t need the walls this time. Our new house has a lot more moisture in the air, so I didn’t need to be trapping it in the same way. This let me use a much simpler set of shelves this time.

These open wire shelves also do a good job of letting light in and air flowing. For the moment they have every houseplant I own crammed on them, but those will get spread out in time.

I bought another set of grow lights to attach to the shelves. I really like this type. They are a set of 4 (because I have four shelves, there are other options). The lights come with a timer, which makes it even easier to use.

The ones I bought come with three different ways to attach them. This is great because it lets you easily attach them to different surfaces. On my last greenhouse I used the adhesive strips that came with them. This let me stick them to the glass shelves, and they were still strongly attached two years later. It also came with screws if you have wooden shelves. I used the zip ties on this project though.

The only real complaint I could make it that because this shelf has an open top, my top light is angled out to face the room. I guess time will tell if the plants on the top shelf grow in a funny direction because of it!

The lights on the bottom three shelves are very unobtrusive though. I am really pleased with this version overall! It was very quick and easy to set up, and the added greenery really brightens my day.
