Remember back in the day when I was deconstructing fitted sheets to sew with? I would cut off the elastic casing around the edge so that I could lay it flat to cut pattern pieces out of. Well, I keep those strips of fabric rolled up until Spring, and then I use them as zero waste plant ties!

In which the author is trying to contain the thorny mess of fairy tale proportions that she has allowed to develop.

My raspberries have been a force to be reckoned with this year. I am sure that we will be grateful for the many berries in our freezer or in jam jars this winter, but right now they are a tad bit terrifying. My Spring was busier than usual so I only got around to tying them up a few days before the berries started to ripen! (I had just left them to sprawl and be a menace to my ankles when lawn mowing until then).

This isn’t really a tutorial, or anything groundbreaking. You don’t really need me to go on about how to tie up my raspberries or anything. I just wanted to share a little tip on how to use something that would go to waste, and avoid buying something new for the same purpose.

Short and sweet, with a little bit less to go to the landfill.

Bonus! If the sheets were cotton, and the elastic was pulled out of the casing, you can compost the ties when they get too worn!

(I didn’t realize it when I started writing this bite sized little post, but Sewing with Thrifted Sheets was only the second post I wrote on this blog! Have you been around since then? If not, here it is: https://www.hodgepodgehomesteading.com/2023/01/30/sewing-with-thrifted-sheets/ )
