I think it is natural for winter to be a quieter season. I used to waste so much time worrying about how we were getting less of certain things done this time of year. I am so glad that I have learned to embrace the fact that this season just looks a little bit different, instead of constantly fighting how it actually turns out to be.

In terms of school work, this is the season where we focus more on our at home learning. The “book work” type things. We do fewer field trips, not quite as many nature walks. (I may firmly believe in being outdoors in all weather on principle, but if I am going to be perfectly honest with you my resolve weakens in the face of cold, grey winter days!)

We focus on getting back into routine after the holidays. It actually feels good after all of the chaos!

Around the house I tend to declutter over the winter. There is just something about being in the house more this time of year that makes me want to simplify things. Even if it is just that my tolerance for tripping over the same things wears thin, I definitely do my best reducing of our inventory in this season.

Socially… Let’s be honest. If you have kids then you have a cold this time of year. If you are over it, then your friends have one. Sometimes you ping back and forth messaging each other for months, never managing to meet in person again until spring!

As much as I love to take the kids skating or sledding, there is also something wonderful about just curling up indoors too. It’s hard to replicate just how content you can feel curled up under a blanket with a good book, looking out over a frosty day. I have learned to let myself rest between busy seasons, and I very much hope you will try it too.
