Have you ever found yourself with a stack of cheap plastic frames that have just been around for years? It’s easy to know how to update wooden ones if you don’t like the finish, but can plastic be transformed as well? Stay tuned to see if these old black plastic frames can be revived!

In which the author spoils the suspense of that last statement by forgetting to take pictures of the original colour.

Most of the tutorials I came across used spray paint, but I was trying to update these as an experiment. I decided to stick to what I already had on hand. Acrylic craft paint to the rescue!

It took several layers to cover the black without it looking streaky. (Probably because I chose lighter colours over black. If you were doing the reverse it would probably take fewer coats.) I was worried that it wouldn’t stick well to the plastic, but that wasn’t a problem at all. The gold did take more coats than the green though, but it is a much more transparent paint to begin with.

Honestly? I was pretty pleased. Considering the frames I started with were in poor enough condition to be destined for the garbage if this didn’t work, this is a pretty good outcome! I didn’t need a primer (though I might change my mind about that if the paint doesn’t hold up over time), and all it cost was a bit of craft paint. I’ll take that as an upcycling win!
