Or; Why Choosing the Correct Paint Type REALLY Matters
We are currently renters, which means that most of the decorating changes I make are the furniture I choose to bring in or the few things I hang on the walls. This corner though… This small section of wall has been my nemesis.

Every time I tried to wash it, it would turn grayer and grosser. The more I washed it, the bigger the gummy gross patch. Eventually the paint was just being washed off of the wall with a halo of awfulness around it… and it was three steps into my house so EVERYONE saw it.
Ok, here goes. Going to be vulnerable here and show the entire internet the gross sight that anyone walking into my house was treated to. (Also, THIS. THIS IS WHY WE DO NOT MIX PAINT TYPES. YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED, PROCEED WITHOUT CHECKING WHAT IS ON YOUR WALLS AT YOUR PERIL.)

Ok, even with my dramatically angled picture it’s not the worst thing in the world. It just bugged me, ok??? Humor me people.
Then when a friend of mine made a great looking accent wall with some inexpensive removable wallpaper she bought online, the wheels started turning…

When I finally bit the bullet I was so excited to get started that I tackled it first thing the next morning. I naively thought it would take me about half an hour. Between having no idea what I was doing, walls that aren’t straight, being afraid to remove the shelf and tackling it solo because I was too impatient to wait for help, it took two hours.
Also I have conclusively proved that it is indeed easily removable, without damaging the underlying paint.
My secondary conclusion is that my signature “make it up as I go along, it will be fine!” approach will not destine me for a career hanging wallpaper one day.

All of that aside, this is absolutely a doable project. It wasn’t too hard, basically every issue I had was impatience and user error. Even with all of my blunders, it looks fantastic. Could I point out a bunch of places where I made mistakes you could see? Sure! But who the heck is looking that closely at the wallpaper behind someone else’s coats?
So if you have been hemming and hawing over trying out some of this stuff in your own space, I am absolutely going to recommend that you go for it! It’s affordable, it isn’t permanent, and it’s something you can absolutely do yourself.
Just make sure you buy a bit more than you need if you are like me.
